สตรีทบาส เริ่มต้นมาจากการเล่นบาสเกตบอลบนถนนนั่นเอง เดิมทีเรียกกันว่าสตรีทบอล (Street Ball หรือ Freestyle Street Basketball) ที่เป็นที่นิยมเล่นจากกลุ่มวัยรุ่นอเมริกันมารวมกลุ่มกัน ฝึกซ้อมเล่นกีฬาชนิดนี้ที่สนามบาสข้างถนน เมื่อก่อนบาสเกตบอลจะนิยมเล่นกันในหมู่คนผิวสีเป็นส่วนใหญ่ จึงมีชื่อเรียกอีกอย่างว่าแบล็กบาสเกตบอล (Black Basketball) หรือ Street Basketball
